Joy not Happiness

Quotepic Rollo May on joy set next to the tight bright pink bud of a peony

Rollo May

Joy, rather than happiness, is the goal of life, for joy is the emotion which accompanies our fulfilling our natures as human beings. It is based on the experience of one's identity as a being of worth and dignity. ~

A thought:

Ah, the joy of relishing our own self and being, including our full human worth and dignity. That sounds like a very pure sort of joy, attainment of the ideal, as he says. I suppose I think of joy in much smaller increments, not so much as a big grand goal. I understand that feeling that he is describing, and I suppose I think of that as being filled with joy and happiness, but appreciating it as it comes to me. And then somehow I find I dwell there more and more. I do agree that joy is a better goal because it is attainable, whereas I have found happiness tougher to pin down.
